Screw the Metrics (Sometimes)
Longevity isn’t won by controlling everything. It’s about building a system that rolls with real life.
Health Isn’t Optimization. It’s Adaptation.
While everyone’s chasing perfect metrics - REM scores, cholesterol ratios, HRV trends - we’re missing a larger truth:
The body doesn’t care about perfection.
It cares about survival.
I was reminded of this while listening to a Mark Hyman with Dr Andy Galpin.. Hyman said it best:
“The fittest aren’t the ones with the most pristine labs. They’re the ones whose systems know how to adjust.”
That adaptability? That’s the real win.
Evolution Favors Flexibility
I tested this firsthand recently.
I flew from London to Ojai, California, and back for the weekend - almost as much time in the air as on the ground. But it was worth it. Two of my close friends, Jared and Emily, were getting married. Everyone I love was going to be there.
So I made a decision: I’m going. And my body will keep up.
Yes, I took chlorophyll. Yes, I packed vitamin C, electrolytes, and hit the infrared sauna when I landed.
But more importantly - I adjusted my mindset.
I didn’t stress about missed sleep or broken routines. I reminded myself:
This is what life is for - celebration, connection, showing up for your people.
And my body responded. It didn’t crash. It adapted.
Because that’s the point. Health isn’t about avoiding chaos.
It’s about being built to move through it.
Beyond Healthspan: Meet Joyspan
Just recently, The New York Times ran a piece introducing joy as leading indicator for longevity. the new term is: joyspan.
The idea? It’s not enough to live long and live well - you have to actually enjoy the life you’re living.
Forget chasing metrics. Instead, build your life around these four pillars:
• Grow: always be curious
• Connect: Deepen your relationships (known fact but feeling lonely has the same impact on your health as smoking 15 cigarettes a day!)
• Adapt: Pivot with grace
• Give: Share yourself freely
Because these are what make longevity worth it.
Flexibility > Perfection
We don’t sleep to earn a perfect score: we sleep to recover.
We don’t travel to sabotage ourselves : we travel to collect stories.
We don’t use health data to feel guilty: we use it to notice patterns and recalibrate.
Data is a lens - NOT a jail cell.
Health isn’t a tidy set of numbers.
Health is a system - physiological and psychological 0 that flexes, recovers, reconnects, and thrives.
Your Real Health Check-In
So here’s the ask:
If your metrics dip - sleep score, HRV, mood - don’t panic. Pause. Ask:
• How’s my joyspan today?
• Am I still growing, connecting, adapting, giving?
• Am I living with my data - not for it?
Because the future of health isn’t about being perfect.
It’s about being resilient.
It’s about living richly.
It’s about building a body and mind that can be fully human.
